“I would like you to know, I am a doctor of music.”-Nina Simone
Nina Simone left us far too early on April 21st, 2003. There are so many songs that she thoughtfully chose to interpret and also songs that she composed that reflect my “Societal Sunday” suggestion to reflect upon what society can do or change; what we as citizens can do to make things better. Take time to listen to Simone’s “Mississippi Goddam” or “Four Women” or her interpretation of Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” or Jacques Brel’s and Rod McKuen’s “If You Go Away” and so many others. Simone was a risk-taker and never backed down from her beliefs. For the last few years, there has been talk of a Nina Simone biopic and perhaps it will come to fruition.
