“Man is not made better by being degraded.”-Dorothea Dix

“Man is not made better by being degraded; he is seldom restrained from crime by harsh measures, except the principle of fear predominates in his character; and then he is never made radically better for its influence.”-Dorothea Dix

The above words were said by Crusader for Mental Health Care Reform and Prison Reform and Educator, Dorothea Dix, whose birthday is today. She was born in 1802 in Maine. Her early life was difficult and she experienced the despair of a mentally ill mom, alcoholic abusive father, separation from her brothers and other hardships.  Dorothea Dix prevailed and went on to become an important voice for individuals with issues of mental illness.

“In a world where there is so much to be done, I felt strongly impressed that there must be something for me to do.”-Dorothea Dix
