4 Reasons to Celebrate Music Today

Today is the birthday of: Stephen Sondheim (83), Andrew Lloyd Weber (65), George Benson (70) and Angelo Badalamenti (76).

The composer/lyricist Sondheim has had so many of his wonderful works on Broadway: West Side Story (Lyrics), Gypsy (Lyrics), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Composer), Company (Composer/Lyricist), Do I Hear a Waltz? (Lyrics), A Little Night Music(Composer/Lyricist) and SO MANY MORE, I could go on and on!

Andrew Lloyd Weber is the composer of my all- time favorite Broadway show, Phantom of the Opera. I remember taking my daughter for her 12th birthday to see this show and I walked out singing. We’ll never forget that day!  Of course, he is also known for other wonderful musicals, like: Evita, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar and others. I so love the song All I Ask of You from Phantom.

Who can forget George Benson’s rendition of the Weill/Mann/Leiber/Stoller song, On Broadway or his interpretation of Leon Russell’s song, This Masquerade? George Benson has been called, “Guitar Man,” since he is such a virtuoso and continues to make beautiful music.

Angelo Badalamenti is a Brooklyn boy! He has scored many films such as, Secretary, Mulholland Drive and the very recent A Late Quartet and  and television series, such as David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.
